Description
"Petunias in a Tree Stump" by Catherine Sherman.
Petunias are a popular flower found in many gardens. Here, an old tree stump serves as a pot for profusely blooming magenta-colored petunias.
The petunia is from South America, but nearly all of the flowers grown in gardens are hybrids created for such variations as color, size, growth pattern and stripes and speckles.
The petunia's name is derived from the French, which took the word petun, meaning "tobacco," from a TupiāGuarani language, a South American native language group. The petunia is related to the tobacco family.
The Maya and Inca believed that the scent of petunias had the power to ward off underworld monsters and spirits.
Petunia is a genus in the family Solanaceae, subfamily Petunioideae. Well known members of Solanaceae in other subfamilies include tobacco (subfamily Nicotianoideae), and the cape gooseberry, tomato, potato, deadly nightshade and chili pepper (subfamily Solanoideae)
