Description
"Redbud Tree Seed Pods" by Catherine Sherman.
The redbud tree (Cercis canadensis) is one of my favorite trees, and I've been lucky enough to have one in my yard wherever I've lived. It's a cheerful, colorful harbinger of Spring.
In this photo, the seed pods from last year's flowers hang on as new flowers bloom. The individual flowers are not very large or showy, but as a group they are gorgeous.
The redbud is a native tree in the Midwest and does well in shade in what is known as an "understory" tree. It comes in a range of pink, lavender and magenta shades, as well as white.
Native Americans ate redbud flowers raw or boiled, and ate roasted seeds.
