Description
"Texas Roadside Wildflowers" by Catherine Sherman.
Brilliant yellow coreopsis flowers bloom along an East Texas road in May. Other blooming wildflowers add to the beauty. This area of Texas is known as the "Piney Woods"with many forests of pines and hardwoods on the rolling hills.
Coreopsis is a genus of flowering plants in the aster family, Asteraceae. Common names include calliopsis and tickseed, a name shared with various other plants. Coreopsis are an important source for pollinators, such as bees and butterflies.
Coreopsis re-seeds itself in the wild in the eastern half of the United States and Canada. Gardeners often plant it in gardens, where it's a durable and cheerful sight throughout the late spring, summer and early fall.
